Ayrshire Connect

Ayr

Ayr is a historic South Ayrshire town, long-established as the tourism heart of the county with many hotels, attractions and restaurants built around its stretch of beaches and harbour.

The town is located 37 miles southwest of Glasgow down the M77 and is still a popular seaside resort with a huge sea front and ample parking spread all over town (including right on the beach front). It also has multiple train station stops and is a stone’s throw from Prestwick International Airport. It even has a harbour! So whatever your mode of transport is, Ayr can accommodate.

Traditionally, Ayr has always been the largest retail centre in the county, and whilst change has hit its high street (as is the case with many other towns in the country), it remains a vibrant shopping hub. Major high street chain stores blend in with a plethora of independent retailers in the network of side streets that the town boasts.

Ayr is a popular day trip tourist destination with plenty to see and do. The beach front offers a range of shops and restaurants as well as a large children’s park for family days out. Various places to eat are also dotted along its high street, from small corner cafes to fast food chains.

Ayr is also the location of a world-famous equestrian racecourse where many events such as the Scottish Grand National and the Ayr Gold Cup bring high profile entertainment.

If you’re into your golf, Ayr has three courses, one of which (Belleisle) is rated highly in the best golf courses in the UK. Within those grounds you can also find Seafield, whilst Dalmilling is set near the racecourse and plays over open parkland.

Directly on the outskirts of the town is Alloway, the birthplace of Robert Burns. This peaceful area boasts a museum of the birthplace of Burns where you can visit and arrange private tours. It also contains a Burns Monument, Brig O'Doon and Alloway Kirk.

There are also plenty of other ways to keep entertained in and around Ayr, such as outdoor activities including tennis and boat trips, and indoor entertainment such as bowling or a show at the Gaiety Theatre. There’s also plenty of history to become immersed in at the Loudon Hall and the Citadel of Ayr. Ayr also holds yearly events that bring in thousands of people from far and wide such as Burns festival (held at Rozelle Park), Tam festival and The Day of The Dead parade along the high street.
